Abstract
The objective of this article is to identify appropriate instruments for mobility assessment in elderly people available in the literature. A systematic review was done. Electronic databases including Pubmed and Embase were searched to identify mobility assessment tools for elderly. Following search terms were used: ¡°aged¡± OR ¡°geriatric¡± OR ¡°elderly¡± AND ¡°mobility¡± OR ¡°gait¡± OR ¡°balance¡± AND ¡°assessment¡± OR ¡°screening¡± OR ¡°measure¡±. After title and abstract exclusion, instruments were selected according to preference and exclusion criteria. The quality of studies was assessed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) methodology checklist for cross-sectional/prevalence study. Six instruments, the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), Timed Up & Go Test (TUG), Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Hierarchical Assessment of Balance and Mobility (HABAM) were identified according to selection criteria from 182 studies. SPPB and TUG were revealed as valid, reliable, and easily applicable tools for both community-dwelling and hospitalized elderly people.
